Non-equilibrium pattern selection in particle sedimentation

چکیده
In this paper, we explain some well known experimental observations in fluid solid interaction from a thermodynamic perspective. In particular we use the extremum of the rate of entropy production to establish the stability of specific patterns observed in single and multiparticle sedimentation in an infinite fluid and the sedimentation of spheres in the presence of walls. While these phenomena have been explained numerically, there is no known rigorous theoretical argument to establish the stability of the observed configurations. We provide a very convincing theoretical basis using entropy based arguments that are considered by several scientists as the underlying theme of nature, life and evolution. In the absence of many rigorous examples for the entropy production principle, our paper advances this argument and lends it much credibility. In addition to looking at the rate of entropy production, we also put forth a very plausible heuristic argument based on the thermal gradients in the systems being studied, which could be the underlying causal principle for many known patterns in nature. 2011 Elsevier Inc. A Study of the conditions of non- sedimentation in Karkhe Inverted Siphon by using a Laboratory Model
Deposition of sediment inside the conduit structures reduces the flow cross section area and increases the flow roughness which causes reduction of flow discharge passing through the conduit. Among the methods which can prevent sediment deposition is non sedimentation condition in the structure, Since the critical section of the inverted siphon in sedimentation is the outlet. In the begining of...
متن کاملNegative Selection Based Data Classification with Flexible Boundaries
One of the most important artificial immune algorithms is negative selection algorithm, which is an anomaly detection and pattern recognition technique; however, recent research has shown the successful application of this algorithm in data classification. Most of the negative selection methods consider deterministic boundaries to distinguish between self and non-self-spaces. In this paper, two...
متن کاملInvestigating the effect of flow entrance and existence of baffle on sedimentation efficiency using Discrete Phase Model (DPM)
Presence of salts in water has been one of the biggest problems of industrial equipment such as evaporators, boilers, and pipes. These salts gradually form scales on evaporators and boilers tubes and reduce their efficiency. Pretreatment processes are conducted to remove these salts; with sedimentation tanks being one of the essential equipment used in these processes. This study numerically si...
متن کاملPatterns of Collective Bacterial Motion in Microfluidic Devices
Interactions between individuals in a group of organisms often lead to the emergence of new patterns of behavior. Such interactions on the most fundamental level can lead to the synchronization of motion velocity and direction of individual organisms. The emerging patterns of collective motion are observable in the living world on a wide range of scale and complexity: from the building blocks o...

We investigate sedimentation of model hard-sphere-like colloidal dispersions confined in horizontal capillaries using laser scanning confocal microscopy, dynamical density functional theory, and Brownian dynamics computer simulations. For homogenized initial states we obtain quantitative agreement of the results from the respective approaches for the time evolution of the one-body density distr...
